March 1, 2015

POSITION: High School Head Speech and Debate Coach and 10th grade English Teacher

LOCATION:  University High School

While the Speech and Debate Coaching and English 10 teaching curriculum is pretty standard for California, there is little that is standard about University High School.   University High School is a 9–12th, free public charter high school located on the campus of California State University, Fresno in sunny California.  UHS provides an accelerated college preparatory education to approximately 490 students who share a common interest in music.   Students receive an academic foundation in the liberal arts and sciences with a strong music curriculum, in a small high school environment, while benefiting from the opportunities available on a large public university campus.   Consequently, the students you will be teaching tend to be very diligent students who are very successful in their studies.   Students come to the school from all over the county including 9 different cities and more than 40 different zip codes.   UHS is a nationally recognized high school (US News and World Report; Newsweek; Washington Post High School Challenge) and has a unique educational curriculum and academic calendar.  We encourage interested candidates to visit our website at

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary: $45,000 to $82,000 for teaching plus as much as a $5,000 stipend for serving as Head Coach of the Speech and debate team
  • Full medical benefits including medical, dental and vision
  • Retirement benefits with the California Teachers Retirement System
  • 190 duty days per school year
  • UHS has one of the best salary/benefit packages of any district in the Central Valley and for the right person with the right credentials; this job will pay very, very well.

Primary Functions:

Coaching:  The UHS speech and debate team emerged last year, growing from 20 -30 kids to more than a 120.  The school employs several assistant coaches and a Head coach to lead the team.  The Head coach is leaving and the school is seeking, with this position, someone who could take over the team this coming year, or in the future.  The school highly values student participation for speech and debate but not at the expense of the academic program.   We see Speech and Debate as an extra-curricular program so it should be run in a way that minimizes student time out of class.   The school goal is to foster student participation, attend league and valley meets (roughly twice a month), with participation in state or nationals as appropriate.   TOC participation is not expected although attending an invitational or two may be appropriate.  The coach is NOT expected to fundraise money, nor does the school have national aspirations for its students or team.   This job is for the speech coach who values speech and debate, but still wants time for their family.

Teaching:  Between 8am and 3pm the teacher will teach tenth grade English to our sophomore class.  This person will be required to teacher 5 sections of English with a class size ratio of 25 to 1 with a prep period and lunch.   They will be the only English 10 teacher at the school so will have flexibility with the 10th grade English curriculum.

Other duties as Assigned: this school owes its success to the staff that runs it.  Becoming a member of the staff means you become one of those members, entrusted by our own school board to uphold our tradition and maintain our excellence.  You will not just be an employee of the school but one of its stewards, a key participant in a 15-year-old school that is one of the country’s best.    So you will be expected to participate in the schools governance and assist with some of the basic tasks familiar to schools.

Education and Experience Desired:

  • Valid single-subject teaching credential required that allows you to teach English (out of state credential may be acceptable).
  • Speech and debate coaching experience
  • English or Rhetoric background
  • Teaching experience
  • Masters Degree
