Dr. James Bushman
Head of School

More than a decade in the making, University High School is the 10th best California High School, 10th best National Charter School and 46th best public high school in the nation according to the (Washington Post; US News and World Report; Newsweek).

University High School provides a college-preparatory, liberal and performing arts education on the campus of Fresno State University.

University High School is ranked first among all schools in Fresno County and the Central Valley.   The National Student Clearing House reports that from 2007 to 2010, 92% of our graduates went to college, the largest percentage of any school in the County.   Equally impressive, UHS students earn degrees from colleges more expediently than graduates from any other high school and on test score achievement, the school is unmatched in the valley.

Dr. James Bushman has spent the last 28 years in high school education and has been a teacher, counselor, and principal before he came to University High School to be its Head of School.    Dr. Bushman earned four degrees from Fresno State including his doctorate and has been named a Noted Alumni by the Kremen School of Education and Human Development and a “Top Dog” by the Bulldog Alumni Association.  He has traveled or lived in more than 60 countries where he studied international education and is using all his experience to make University High School the premier public high school in the country.    Dr. Bushman is married to his wife Jonica and both his daughters graduated from University High School and are currently attending universities.

When Dr. Bushman came to University High School in 2006 the school occupied a series of modular buildings.    His campaign to get a permanent facility built led to the Governor of California visiting our future campus site on December 19, 2008 where the Governor made a plea to the State Legislature to resolve the State budget crisis so schools like University High School could be funded.   Two years later University High School moved into the new school facility with its 22 classrooms, 3 music rooms and 4 science labs that Dr. Bushman saw built.

University High School is now the ONLY high school in the County where students can take a rigorous high school program graduating with a year of college already completed and engage in a range of performing arts courses such as choir, drama and instrumental music all with class sizes of 25 to 1.   The school is distinguished but with its new building it is only getting started.  We are creating nothing less than the perfect high school experience for students.
